Built from experience, not theory
I’m Gary, the person behind Doug Walkers. I started my dog walking business in Glasgow in 2018 with zero clients.
My first paid job was puppy sitting for an hour and a half each day. Then I found my first regular dog to walk. When the puppy became old enough to join us, the two of them became my first little group — and Doug Walkers grew from there.
I found those first clients through local Facebook groups and Meta advertising. Once the business became established, word of mouth and referrals took over.
Since then, I’ve worked with hundreds of dogs, built and run the business myself and made it through the enormous disruption of COVID. I’m still a working dog walker today, typically taking 12–18 dogs across 2–3 group walks, followed by solo walks and training in the afternoons.
Some of the dogs I walk have been with me since they were puppies. Over the years, the clients I’ve lost have generally been because they moved out of my area, and I’ve built relationships with some families where I’m treated as much more than simply the person who walks their dog.
That real-world experience is what The Dog Walker Playbook is built around: the things that worked, the things I learned the hard way and the systems I actually use — not theory from someone who’s never had to fill a dog-walking diary.
Why “Doug Walkers”? 🐾
There’s a very Scottish explanation for that. Here in Scotland, dog is commonly pronounced “dug” in our dialect. When I needed a name for my new Glasgow dog walking business, Doug Walkers was born. 😂

Thinking about becoming a dog walker?
Starting a dog walking business can feel like there are a hundred things you need to figure out first. Here are straightforward answers to some of the questions you may have before getting started.
Do I need experience or qualifications to start a dog walking business?
You do not generally need a specific formal qualification simply to start a dog walking business in the UK, but that does not mean you should start unprepared. You need to be confident handling dogs, take safety seriously and understand the insurance, legal and practical responsibilities involved. The Playbook is designed to help you approach the business professionally from the beginning.
Are these guides suitable if I have never run a business before?
Yes. The Playbook starts from zero and does not assume you already understand marketing, pricing, sales or business systems. Guide 1 begins with the practical steps involved in going from an idea to finding your first paying dog walking client.
Can I actually make a living as a dog walker?
Dog walking can become a full-time business, but there is no guaranteed income. What you can earn depends on factors including your prices, location, number of clients, how efficiently you organise your diary and your operating costs. The Playbook shows you how to think about those numbers and build deliberately rather than simply hoping enough clients appear.
What does the Complete Dog Walker Playbook include?
The Complete Playbook includes all four guides: Your First Dog Walking Client, From 1 to 10 Dog Walking Clients, Fill Your Diary and Scale. Together they cover the journey from starting with no clients through attracting customers, building a fuller diary, improving how the business operates and deciding how to grow beyond your own capacity. The Complete Playbook also includes the practical tools supplied with the guides, including the pricing calculator.
Should I buy the Complete Playbook or one individual guide?
If you are starting from scratch and want the complete roadmap, the Complete Playbook is the best-value option. It costs £79.99 compared with £99.96 for the four guides separately. If you already have an established dog walking business and only need help with a particular stage, you can buy the relevant guide individually for £24.99.
Why pay for a guide when I can find dog walking advice online for free?
There is plenty of useful free information online. The problem is that it is scattered across articles, videos, social posts and forums, often written for different countries or by people with very different experience. The Playbook gives you a structured, UK-focused route built around a dog walking business that was actually started from zero and is still operating today. You are paying for the roadmap, practical tools and years of lessons organised into something you can actually work through.
Are these guides based on a real dog walking business?
Yes. Doug Walkers began as a Glasgow dog walking business in 2018 with zero clients. The guides are based on what I learned building and running that business: finding the first customers, building regular groups, dealing with setbacks, organising the diary and creating a business that has worked with hundreds of dogs. They are not generic business guides with “dog walking” added to the title.
Will the guides tell me what to charge for dog walking?
They will help you work out sensible pricing rather than pretending there is one correct price for every dog walker in the UK. Your area, service, capacity and costs all matter. The Complete Playbook includes a pricing calculator to help you understand what your numbers need to look like.
How quickly can I start a dog walking business?
You can put the foundations in place relatively quickly, but building a dependable client base usually takes consistent work. That is why the first three guides use focused 30-day action plans. They give you something concrete to do rather than promising that you will have a fully booked diary overnight.
Do the guides cover insurance, contracts and safety?
Yes. The Playbook covers the practical admin, safety and business systems you need to think about as the business develops. The guidance is designed to help you operate professionally, but it is not a substitute for individual legal, tax, insurance or other professional advice where that is required.
Are the guides specifically for UK dog walkers?
Yes. These are UK-focused dog walking business guides, written around the realities of building a dog walking business here rather than adapting a US business course for a UK audience.
Do I need to follow every guide in order?
No. If you already have clients, you can jump to the stage that matches your business. If you are starting from zero, working through Guides 1–4 in order gives you the clearest progression from getting started to building, filling and eventually scaling the business.
Will buying the guides guarantee that I get clients?
No — and any business guide that guarantees customers or income should be treated carefully. The Playbook gives you strategies, systems, tools and specific actions based on real experience. You still have to put them into practice, and results will vary by area, effort, pricing, competition and other factors.
How do I receive the guides?
These are digital products. They are delivered after purchase, so you can start working through them without waiting for anything to arrive in the post. Individual guide contents and terms are shown on each product page.
